分析:这道题同学们要特别注意2000年的预测使用的时态,不是is predicted,或will 而是was predicted,或would, 因为这是1990年对2000的预测,即过去对过去的预测。

The data in the table illustrate the population in 1990 in three major cities in the world, the prediction for 2000 and the actual figures.

 

There were 15 million people in San Paulo in 1990 and the number was predicted to increase dramatically to 24m in 2000. But the actual figure was only 18m, which was not as substantial as that forecast.

 

Jakarta was the home of 9.5m people in 1990, much fewer than San Paulo. Similarly to San Paulo, there was also projected to be a significant growth (to 14m) in the number of Jakarta inhabitants in 2000. However, the growth in reality turned out to be moderate, to 11.5m.

 

In contrast to the upward trend in both Jakarta and San Paulo, the population in Shanghai showed an unexpected decline during the same decade. Shanghai was inhabited by 13.5m people in 1990 and a rise to 17m was projected to be seen in 2000. However, the actual figure (12.5m) was surprisingly lower instead of higher than 1990.

 

From the table it can be seen that Shanghai experienced a declining trend in population whereas Jakarta and San Paulo shared a climbing one in spite of a general prediction of increase for all these three metropolises.

Witnessing the development of globalization, many people advocate international news as a formal subject in secondary school. As for me, I think that this proposal goes too far beyond a reasonable consideration for curriculum design. (非谓语,宾语从句)

 

It is true that the interaction among nations and regions is performed in increasingly diversescales and broad ways nowadays. People travel to, trade with, and do research and manufacture in other countries. Hence, it would be wise to recognize that the obvious differences between cultures can be either facilitating or conflicting on the international stage. Studying world news at secondary school enables young people to see the world from various perspectives and therefore such abilities as critical thinking and cultural sensitivity can be expected. These qualities are deemed as crucial for success in the globalized context. (形式主语,被动句,宾语从句,并列句)

 

Nonetheless, school curriculum cannot include every important aspect of human wisdom. Instead, it is those domains that offer fundamental knowledge and skills such as math and science or basic ways of thinking like philosophy and literature that should be considered to be compulsory for school children to make effort on. However, international news is volatile and there can be little in principle to extract for youngsters to reflect on. In addition, regardless of globalization, most of us live locally rather than globally, which means that studying international news can be a waste of time for many in the future. (强调句,定语从句,并列句)

 

In conclusion, adults surely wish the younger generation to learn as much as possible. However, curriculum design has to be sensible and follow the principles of learning. International news is better to be arranged as a selective subject for those who are interested in. If it is imposed on every student, it can be a waste of school time for many. (定语从句,条件状语从句)
